Device Replacement

Device Replacement applies to Platforms using Device-Bound Licensing, currently Windows and macOS. It is the process of moving a valid usage right from an old device to a new device under conditions defined by Vietnam Office.

  • Device Replacement is not Reinstall — Reinstall applies when reinstalling on the same device or an environment still covered by the existing Device Binding. Device Replacement applies when the device itself changes.
  • A new device does not automatically receive the License — Installing Vietnam Office on a new Windows computer or Mac does not automatically release the License from the old device or create a new Device Binding.
  • Device Replacement conditions — The License/Entitlement must be valid; Product, Version, and Platform must match; rights must not be suspended/revoked; and the transfer must remain within the applicable policy and granted Quantity.
  • Same Platform only — Device Replacement does not convert Platforms. A Windows License may be moved only to an eligible Windows device; a macOS License only to an eligible Mac.
  • No Windows-to-macOS transfer — Replacing a Windows PC with a Mac changes the Platform and is not a standard Device Replacement. A separate macOS Platform Entitlement is required.
  • Device Replacement flow — Identify the current License → verify the old device/current entitlement → request device replacement → check eligibility → update Device Binding → activate the new device → retire the previous Device Binding under the applicable policy.
  • Replacement due to failure/loss/unavailability — If the old device cannot be accessed, Vietnam Office may require additional verification before allowing Device Binding to be changed.
  • Major hardware changes — If hardware changes cause the system to identify the device as a different Device Identity, the case may be handled as Device Replacement under the applicable policy.
  • Quantity does not increase — Device Replacement only moves an existing right; it does not create an additional License or increase the number of concurrently permitted devices.
  • Version Entitlement remains unchanged — Replacing a device does not create rights to a new Version. The new device may be activated only with a Version covered by the existing Version Entitlement.
  • Not applicable to Mobile under Device Binding — Android and iOS/iPadOS use Store Entitlement and do not use Desktop Device-Bound Licensing Device Replacement.
  • Backend determines the active Device Binding — The Vietnam Office backend is the authoritative source for determining which device is currently associated with a Desktop License.
Device Replacement principle: valid Desktop License → move to a new device on the same Platform → verify eligibility → transfer Device Binding → activate the new device → no increase in Quantity and no change to Product/Version/Platform Entitlement.
